Fire breaks out at PSV’s stadium as black smoke billows from 35,000-seater arena

A fire that broke out at PSV Eindhoven's stadium on Wednesday morning hasn't caused any damage to the stand.

Dutch firefighters arrived to tackle flames on the roof of the corner of the north and east stands of the Philips Stadion. Black smoke was seen billowing into the sky above the stadium, but firefighters have confirmed there is no damage.

There has been some minor damage outside of the stadium. It is unclear how the fire started at the Philips Stadion, but the firefighters believe stored building materials caught alight in an unknown manner, causing the blaze.

Some of the employees of the stadium – and athletes at the Basic Fit fitness club – were present, and they were evacuated as a precaution.

They were allowed back into the stadium once the flames had been tackled and the damage had been assessed.

The club are set to face Real Betis on Saturday at the Philips Stadion, it remains unclear if the Dutch side will fulfil the fixture at their home ground. PSV are also yet to comment on the events of Wednesday morning.

PSV are managed by Manchester United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy, and they drove current United boss Erik ten Hag close to the title last year finishing second behind Ajax.

As a result, the Dutch side qualified for the Champions League, and they'll face Monaco in the third qualifying round.
