Final 2020/21 Premier League table without VAR proves its massive impact
VAR has had a significant impact on the Premier League this season – and a new table reveals just how different the final standings would look without input from officials at Stockley Park.
Although there’s no difference at the very top of the table, with Manchester City still cantering to the title by 13 points, it’s all change where the remainder of the top-four spots are concerned.
According to the Prem without VAR league table, Liverpool would leapfrog arch-rivals Manchester United and finish as runners-up.
The Reds have been stung by technology on more than one occasion this season, with Jordan Henderson’s late winner against Everton in October and Sadio Mane’s strike against Brighton both falling foul of the Stockley Park penpushers.
But the VAR-less table corrects those decision and puts them a point above United, who got the rub of the green just last week when Edinson Cavani’s opener was allowed to stand against Fulham.
United and Liverpool swapping positions is a big enough change, but that’s nothing compared to the new-look race for fourth.
Remarkably, Chelsea, Tottenham, West Ham and Leicester would all have missed out on the top-four in a world without VAR, allowing Arsenal to jump four places and return to the Champions League for the first time since 2017.
The Gunners finished six points adrift of the final UCL place in real life, but sneak in here courtesy of their head-to-head record against Chelsea and Leicester.
Those two make-up the Europa League placings, with Tottenham keeping hold of their Europa Conference League spot, showing that even without technology the north Londoners can’t escape being Spursy.
West Ham would have missed out on Europe altogether, finishing just ahead of Leeds and Aston Villa, who complete the top-half.

Everton have benefitted the most from VAR this season and drop five places to 11th without the aid of technology.
The rest of the league remain largely unchanged, with Brighton the biggest movers – up three to 14 and above south coast rivals Southampton.
Even without help of Stockley Park officials, there’s no reprieve for West Brom, Fulham and Sheffield United, all of whom remain in the bottom-three, although the foremost pair do switch places.
