Fernandes’ superb reaction to being benched vs Liverpool sums winning mentality
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Bruno Fernandes reacted to being benched against Liverpool by practising his free-kicks, something which paid off to perfection in the game.
Fernandes climbed off the bench in the 66th minute of Manchester United's FA Cup fourth round clash against their old rivals, and with the score at 2-2.
Twelve minutes later the Portuguese stepped up to beat Alisson from just outside the penalty area after a foul by Fabinho on Edinson Cavani.
“Great goal. A good free-kick," Solskjaer told BBC Sport after the match.
“When you leave him out, like I had to do today, he stayed about 45 minutes after training yesterday shooting free-kicks. So I was quite confident he’d hit the target today.
“He’s never happy with me when I tell him to go inside if he’s playing the day after, so he got some practice."
United fell behind in the game when Mohamed Salah clipped the visitors in front from a Roberto Firmino pass, only for Mason Greenwood to equalise after being found by Marcus Rashford.
The roles were then reversed in the second period when Greenwood teed up Rashford to score, only for Salah to level again.
Then it was down to Fernandes to send United through to a fifth round clash at home to West Ham.
On his side's performance, Solskjaer added: "They were brilliant.
“When you go down, the reaction of everyone… We really played some good stuff in periods.
“Good goals we scored.
“You have to defend well against them, of course. I thought we managed to react well and of course towards the end there were always some moments, but we kept them away."
