Fernandes signals intention to stay at Man Utd – even if they don’t win trophies

Bruno Fernandes has signalled his intention to remain at Old Trafford "for five years" – even if Manchester United are struggling to end their trophy hoodoo.

The Portuguese midfielder, 28, has been a huge hit in Manchester since his mid-season arrival in the 2020 January transfer window but is yet to aid them to any silverware. The Red Devils forked out an initial £47.million, which could rise by a further £20.6m depending on additional bonuses, to pry him away from boyhood club Sporting Lisbon.

And despite revealing his discontent that the Primera Liga outfit had previously blocked a move to Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur, Fernandes told The Athletic it is a "dream come true" to walk out at the Theatre of Dreams.

"I said to them, ‘I feel good in the club, it is a dream come true to be here'," Fernandes recalls of his conversations with Man Utd's football director John Murtough and technical director Darren Fletcher.

"I would like to create stability for myself, for my family but I want to be competitive. I want to win trophies and play against the best."

While the lack of Champions League football has restricted new boss Erik ten Hag in his first window, the Dutchman has still splashed over £200m in the market. But the arrivals of Lisandro Martinez, Antony, Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Tyrell Malacia have helped spearhead United to four top-flight wins on the bounce.

Now just a point outside of the top four, Fernandes knew it would only be a matter of time before England's most successful club was back battling for trophies.

Fernandes continued: "I said, ‘I understand that but I will be here for five years, and if in four of them, or three of them, we are fighting for trophies and against the best teams, and in a team that wants to compete, and with a manager who comes and puts his mark, I am OK with that’.

"The club was clear with that. I trust them. I think I am getting the rewards of that because the club has made a mark on the market. They signed players with big qualities and big names. Now it is about us doing our job on the pitch."
