Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes had Portugal fans celebrating against Spain despite his shot hitting the side netting. His effort whistled past the goal but looked like it had nestled into the far corner, just like Raheem Sterling’s effort against Italy in 2014.
Fernandes picked the ball up on the edge of the Spain box before hitting a fierce strike with his left foot that left goalkeeper Unai Simon. However, fortunately for the Athletic Bilbao shot-stopper, the strike was just wide.
But the ball slammed into the sidenetting, with several fans in the Estadiu Municipal de Braga jumping to their feet believing that their nation had gone 1-0 up. And even the English commentary team thought that Fernandes had scored a wonder goal.
He exclaimed: “Bruno Fernandes is going to have a go here and, oh, what a decision that turned out to be,” with another shouting ‘staggering’. Though it soon became apparent that it was a shot off target – giving England supporters flashback’s of Sterling’s strike against Italy previously.
