Ferdinand: Salah 'one of the best goalscorers in the Premier League'

Rio Ferdinand insists Mo Salah will go down as ‘one of the best goalscorers in the Premier League’ after Liverpool star surpasses last season’s tally with cool finish to send Reds on their way to much-needed win over RB Leipzig

  • Rio Ferdinand was full of praise for Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah on Tuesday night
  • Jurgen Klopp’s side secured a crucial win over RB Leipzig in Champions League
  • Salah scored the first goal in 2-0 victory, which was his 24th goal of campaign

Rio Ferdinand was full of praise for Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah after the forward surpassed his goal tally of last season against RB Leipzig.

The Egyptian star scored 23 goals in all competitions – 48 games – as Liverpool ran away with the Premier League title, but his composed finish in the Champions League last-16 tie on Tuesday was his 24th in 34 matches this campaign.

Salah’s 53rd-minute strike sent Jurgen Klopp’s side on their way to a much-needed 2-0 first-leg victory in Budapest, and former Manchester United defender Ferdinand believes Salah will go down as one of the greatest scorers in Premier League history.

‘It just shows you this guy’s standards that he’s set are just so high but he’s maintaining it,’ he told BT Sport.

‘For top players it’s not about one season or two seasons, it’s about maintaining it over a course of three, four or five seasons and he’s doing that.

‘He’s going to go down as one of the best to play in the Premier League, definitely as a goalscorer, because those levels are huge.’

Salah made the move to Anfield from Roma in the summer of 2017 and score a staggering 44 goals in 52 matches in his first season. Since then he has notched more than 20 goals a season.

However racking up 24 goals already this season might come as a surprise with Liverpool far from their best for large parts of the campaign. This year their form has slumped and they’ve fallen 13 points behind league leaders Manchester City.

Former Liverpool striker Peter Crouch referred to Salah as the ‘deadliest man around’ when it comes to putting the ball into the back of the net.

‘Leipzig were the product of their own downfall really,’ he told BT Sport. ‘[Marcel] Sabitzer giving that one away to the deadliest man around at the moment, he’s ice cold when he gets in that position.

‘You just know when he’s in that position he’s going to finish and he did. It was a beautiful reverse into the near corner.’

Liverpool’s win over Leipzig was just their third in seven matches as European action provided a welcome distraction from their struggles in the Premier League. The Reds will be looking to build on Tuesday’s result when they welcome Merseyside rivals Everton on Saturday.
