Female footy fanatic aiming to visit all 92 EFL clubs slams ‘sexist’ Joey Barton

A female football fanatic plans to visit all 92 English football clubs to encourage other women to attend matches.

Kerry-Rose O'Donnell, 32, has been going to support her local team since she was in her mother’s womb and has now visited 50 out of EFL grounds in the UK. After dubbing herself the ‘EFL girl’ online, she has received a huge amount of attention from football fans all over the world.

The marketing and communication manager from Plymouth said: “It’s become important to me to share a female voice in lower league football. I want to show that girls can support a club and follow them home and away – and there’s nothing wrong with that, it should be encouraged.”

She slammed former player Joey Barton who has said women “shouldn’t be talking with any kind of authority” on men’s football. She said: “Joey Barton’s comments are just laughable. It’s just sexism in its purest form and it’s disappointing that he’s given any sort of airtime.

“It reflects some of the sentiment I get from male football fans for even going to watch the men’s game and having a fan’s opinion of it. I’ve been watching my club for 30 years, how is my opinion any less valid than a male fan just because I’m a woman and would never have a chance to play in the men’s game?”

Barton has launched a string of tirades against female pundits recently and rowed with former Sky Sports reporter Bianca Westwood as he defended his on Piers Morgan’s Talk TV show. The former Newcastle and Manchester City midfielder has also feuded with TNT Sports presenter Laura Woods and Football Focus host Alex Scott.

He took aim at the latter again today (Saturday), posting on X (formerly Twitter): “36 minutes. Football Focus turned off. Sorry, it's just terrible. Drivel and nonsense served with a side of boring. No wonder it’s getting canned. Well done to all involved. Another flagship destroyed by The Tokens.”

Despite reports the long-running was under threat due to declining ratings, the BBC has insisted Football Focus is not being cancelled any time soon. In a statement sent to Daily Star Sport, a BBC spokesperson said: “Football Focus continues to herald the start of a whole weekend packed full of sporting coverage for fans across BBC Sport, including radio, our website and Player.

“Week-on-week it is the most watched programme during that time slot and iPlayer viewing figures are also strong, so we know its popularity is enduring for fans, wherever they choose to watch.”
