Farting footballer sent off as ref deemed flatulence "deliberate provocation"

There have been some strange red cards in footballing history, but players may find it hard to top Adam Lindin Ljungkvist.

In 2016, Ljungkvist was playing in a reserve match between Swedish sides Järna SK and Pershagen SK when he was sent for an early bath.

However, Ljungkvist wasn't sent off for an array challenge, or dissent, but instead for farting in front of the referee.

Dany Kako, who was the man in the middle, deemed that Ljungkvist breaking wind was "deliberate provocation."

Ljungkvist was flashed a second yellow card in what local media called "bizarre circumstances" that saw him leave the field.

"I had a bad stomach, so I simply let go," Ljungkvist told local media after the bizarre incident.

"Then I received two yellow cards and then red. Yes, I was shocked, it's the strangest thing I have ever experienced in football.

"I asked the referee, 'What, am I not allowed to break wind a little?' 'No,' he replied.

"I don’t get it but maybe he thought I farted in my hand and threw the fart at him. But I did not."

While Kristoffer Linde, the opposition's striker, added: "I was standing a good distance away but I heard the fart loud and clear.

"It's the strangest thing I've seen on a pitch, and I've been playing football since I was eight years old."

But Kako offered an explanation: "I perceived it as deliberate provocation.

"He did it on purpose and it was inappropriate. Therefore, he received a yellow card."
