Fans want Watford relegated as floodlight failure delays Norwich clash

Premier League fans have called for Watford to be relegated after the floodlights partially went out at Vicarage Road in the 3-0 defeat to Norwich City.

Watford suffered a huge blow in their efforts to avoid relegation as they were outclassed by Norwich, who leapfrogged them in the table courtesy of a stunning second-half brace by Josh Sargent and a Juraj Kucka own-goal.

Claudio Ranieri’s side suffered the additional embarrassment of their floodlights switch off midway through the second-half following a problem with the mains, leaving referee Mike Dean to stop the play.

Fans were left fuming as there was plenty of light available to continue, but had to wait over 11 minutes before Dean decided to carry on under the same conditions.

And as if losing a ‘six-pointer’ to their relegation rivals wasn’t bad enough, the Hornets were mocked by opposition fans across social media for the unnecessary delay caused by the incident.

One Twitter user wrote: “Should relegate Watford automatically for this, f****** embarrassing.”

Another said: “What on earth on going on here, the lights came back on and almost no difference was made… Relegate Watford just for this.”

A third added: “Peak Premier League this, do us all a favour and relegate Watford.”

Meanwhile, Sky Sports presenters Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher also slammed the delay, calling it “absolute nonsense” due to there being sufficient light.

Neville said: "I completely agree with Jamie and his thoughts. The longer this game doesn't continue, they're creating a bigger problem.

“We're at pitch level and there's no real issue at all. Someone at the Premier League needs to get the message to Mike Dean that this game can continue now as this is an absolute nonsense.

“There have been England games where there has been far less light.”

Carragher added: "You can still play. You can still see what's going on. It's not like it's cricket. They can play!

“There's been a lot of talk of teams getting games called off, but this would be a new one. Who decides how strong the floodlights have to be?"
