Fans question Chelsea’s season ticket holders as ‘a lot’ of fans at Arsenal game

Football fans have questioned how Chelsea have so many fans at Stamford Bridge with only season ticket holders allowed to attend.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich was sanctioned by the UK Government due to Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine. The Russian's assets in the UK were frozen last month – which included operations at Chelsea including selling tickets to games.

As a result, only fans with season tickets have been able to attend fixtures since Abramovich was sanctioned by the UK Government. However, fans were left baffled by how the Blues' stadium looked so full when playing Arsenal on Wednesday evening.

One Leeds fan joked: "Chelsea have a lot of season ticket holders. Can’t imagine many been at ER in a couple of weeks' time!"

"So this many people are season ticket holders at Chelsea? Interesting," a second added. While a third tweeted: "Do the season ticket holders not know the 'Chelsea, Chelsea, CHELSEA' song?"

A fourth joked: "There’s no way that Chelsea have that many season ticket holders btw, Stamford Bridge has more fans in it than the Etihad."

Chelsea's attendance for the clash was at 32,249, leaving just over 10,000 seats empty.

Alongside being able to sell tickets, Chelsea have also seen their merchandise sales shut down as a result of the sanctions.

A statement on Chelsea's website reads: "The Stadium Megastore at Stamford Bridge is currently closed until further notice." While their online store states: "Due to the latest government announcement, the Chelsea Megastore Official Online Store shall be offline until further notice."

Abramovich has announced his intentions to sell the club, but it remains unclear if the sale will go through before the transfer window.
