Fans love Neville’s ‘brilliant’ take on Trent’s form with 4 rules he must learn

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has been lauded on his analysis of Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The England international has endured a difficult start to the season that has seen him be frequently snubbed for first team selection by Three Lions’ manager Gareth Southgate. While the 23-year-old did score a wonderful goal in Jurgen Klopp ’s side’s 9-0 demolition of Bournemouth, he was found wanting during the Merseysiders’ 3-3 home draw against Brighton and Hove Albion.

Klopp may have launched a staunch defence of the talent he has nurtured ever since he afforded him his debut in 2016, but the critics have still been out for Alexander-Arnold. And Neville expertly broke down the areas he occasionally struggles in, after first pointing out that the Scouser has created an "absolutely obscene" 315 chances and registered 44 assists in the last four seasons alone.

“Trent has been exceptional for 4/5 years for Liverpool," Neville said on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football. "Every full-back now needs to have both attacking and defensive strengths. His attacking statistics are absolutely ridiculous – one of the great talents this country as produced.

“I said a couple of years ago that this could hurt Trent. In these last 7/8 games – Liverpool have conceded most of their goals on Trent’s side. He’s not a young player anymore. Sometimes he doesn’t do the basics and that surprises me.”

Neville segmented Alexander-Arnold’s improvements to four key roles, sprinting back in transition, keeping a low body position when crouched, maintaining an open body shape when ball is on the other side off the pitch, and scanning his surroundings by rotating his head, particularly at the back post. And this piece of punditry has certainly resonated with other football fans.

“I absolutely love his punditry. Knows the position inside out too. The best on sky sports by a mile,” one fan said on social media. Another very quickly added, “Proper analysis not amateur twitter opinions on Trent.”

“Cold. Hard. Facts. Been saying this for ages. Trent is not a younger player anymore he has years of experience and shouldn’t still be making these backs mistakes still. The midfield and other defenders still need to take a long hard look at themselves too,” another fan added.

Neville concluded: "No full-back that I've ever seen in this country can do what he can do so if he can just work on those four basic things and get those consistency elements with those things, we won't just have one of the best attacking right-backs this country has ever produced, we’ll have probably the best right-back the world has ever produced, because this is a Cafu. This is that level of full-back. This is something unbelievably special."
