Fans left shocked by unrecognisable ex-Prem stars playing for City in Ted Lasso

Football fans were left shocked when a host of ex-Premier League stars posed as Manchester City players in the latest episode of Ted Lasso.

Plucky coach Ted Lasso has taken his Richmond side to the Etihad Stadium to take on the champions. However, eagle-eyed fans spotted a slew of familiar faces in the City side as they made their way out on the pitch.

An almost unrecognisable Jay Bothroyd was front and centre, while Wolves cult hero George Elokobi could also be seen. Some fans even claimed Winston Reid and Matty Jarvis were spotted in the background of the shot.

One baffled fan tweeted: "I swear to god Jay Bothroyd is in the new episode of Ted Lasso playing for Man City!"

And after Bothroyd confirmed he was in the episode, fans couldn't help but make the same joke. "In fairness to Jay Bothroyd, he posed as a footballer for many a club so it’s not something he’s particularly unfamiliar with doing!"

"Saw Jay Bothroyd pose as a professional footballer for Sheffield Wednesday once. Wouldn't recommend it," a third joked. And another added: "I heard the commentator say Elokobi but thought 'Nah it can’t be!'"

However, the most surprising cameo of the episode was reserved for Pep Guardiola – who had a conversation with the main character, Ted Lasso.

Guardiola wished Lasso a "good game" and Lasso responded: "I gotta be honest with ya, you’re a tough guy to beat, man." Football fans loved the Catalans' cameo: "Pep Guardiola's cameo in Ted Lasso was unexpected but I loved it!"

"This was brilliant. Fair play to Guardiola. Can't believe the last episode is next week," another added.
