Fans laud ‘best triple save I’ve ever seen’ from ex-underwear model in FA Cup

Birmingham City goalkeeper Neil Etheridge has been lauded for the ‘best triple save’ many people have ever seen.

The Filipino international, who has posed for underwear shoots in the past, has had to content himself with a place on the bench this season for the Blues. However, the former Premier League goalkeeper was given a very rare opportunity to man the sticks for City in their FA Cup third round replay against Forest Green Rovers.

Birmingham fell behind to an early goal from Ben Stevenson but turned the game around thanks to second half goals from Lukas Jutkiewics and Kevin Long. However, their hero of the night was Etheridge, after some truly spectacular goalkeeping.

Etheridge got a finger tip onto a fierce, looping volley from Regan Hendry, before leaping back up and somehow clawing a rebounded effort from Matty Stevens from point blank range. It’s safe to say, the Blues’ fans are indebted to the former Cardiff City goalkeeper.

"Best triple/double save I've ever seen in my life. Hands down. Phenomenal goalkeeping. No one's ever doubted Etheridge as a shot stopper," one Birmingham fan wrote online.

"You will not see better saves all season," another added. "He never ever should have had a chance with the second, but still unreal that," a rather half empty supporter wrote, insinuating the second effort was a poor finish rather than a brilliant save.

"Man of the match just for that save alone. Kept us in it," one other City fan commented. "That is unbelievable, possibly one of the best saves I've seen in a while," tweeted another admirer. Triple saves is not the only thing Etheridge is good at.

He has also appeared in various photoshoots promoting underwear brands and other fashionable companies in the Philippines, where he is widely idolised for his football heroics in this country. Nevertheless, he would still back himself to be more successful between the posts than in front of a camera.

"Modelling isn't really my forte," he said in an interview with BBC West Sport in 2022. "But I like endorsing products – it comes with the sport. It puts me in a good light as well. The people I work with help people in the Philippines as well, so it's not just for myself, it's for others as well."
