Fans do double take as forgotten Arsenal title winner picks up Man City medal

Premier League fans were shocked to see a former Arsenal title winner receiving a medal during Manchester City's celebrations.

Pep Guardiola's squad and staff were crowned after beating Chelsea 1-0 on Sunday (May 21), having been confirmed as champions 24 hours before following the Gunners' 1-0 defeat away at Nottingham Forest. The post-match focus was on the likes of Erling Haaland and Jack Grealish.

But while City's goal machine was telling his team-mate he "f***ing loves him", eagle-eyed Sky Sports viewers spotted ex-goalkeeper Richard Wright in the background. The 45-year-old has been a part of City's coaching team since 2016.

However, there was still shock at his presence on social media. One person tweeted: "Sorry am I seeing RICHARD WRIGHT? Please tell me he isn't still playing? He's like 50?"

Another asked: "Is that Richard Wright having a beer??" While a third questioned: "How on earth has Richard Wright got that gig with Man City."

"The annual appearance of Richard Wright," joked a fourth. And a fifth wrote: "City having Richard Wright on their coaching team is hilarious."

Wright broke through at hometown club Ipswich Town in the late 90s, going on to make 240 appearances across six seasons. He then joined Arsenal in 2001 for a fee of £2million.

In his solitary campaign at Highbury, Wright made 10 league appearances under Arsene Wenger – including one on the final day which meant he qualified for a winners' medal.

The shot stopper was also capped twice by England. He finished his playing career with four years with City, during which time he failed to make an appearance before becoming a part of Guardiola's team.
