Fans call out Pep Guardiola’s ‘biggest lie in football’ – and it’s hard to argue

Erling Haaland has made a mockery of Pep Guardiola's claim that Sergio Aguero would be "irreplaceable" for Manchester City.

Guardiola twice claimed the Premier League champions would not be able to find someone capable of taking over the Argentine's scoring duties. In 2019, he said: "Sergio is irreplaceable. It will be one of the toughest asks of my career to [replace him]. We have another incredible striker in Gabriel [Jesus] and maybe another one will come when Sergio leaves but he is irreplaceable."

A teary-eyed Guardiola doubled down on that claim after City's title triumph in 2021, saying: "We cannot replace him, we cannot."

The fullness of time has proved that claim to be somewhat false, thanks to the scoring talents of Norwegian ace Haaland. The 22-year-old already has 19 goals in 12 matches for City and looks set to rewrite the record books, not just at the Etihad but across the Premier League.

Cynical football fans have now gone in on Guardiola for what they believe to be the "biggest lie in football," with Haaland proving a rather capable replacement for City legend Aguero.

One supporter wrote: "Still cannot believe that bald man was crying on live TV saying 'we cannot replace him' just to get Haaland to terrorise us even more. He deserves an Oscar."

A second person said: "'We cannot replace him' must be the biggest lie in football history." As a third Twitter user added: "Biggest lie in world football tbh."

While someone else commented: "I think us as City fans need to be honest with ourselves.. The phrase 'we can not replace him' is the biggest lie ever told in football right after 'not in my lifetime.'" A fifth fan tweeted a video of Guardiola's claim and said: "Throwback to when Pep spat the biggest lie in football history."

Jack Grealish sang the praises of Haaland after the former Borussia Dortmund star bagged a brace against Copenhagen on Wednesday night.

"Do you know what, it’s unbelievable honestly," he said of his goal-crazy team-mate. "I’ve never experienced anything like it in my life. I was just laughing, like how?!

"He’s always there. It’s a pleasure to play with him. Their goalkeeper said to me after one of his goals, he’s not human! I was like I know. He’s so humble, he’s great around the place, that's God's honest truth. Hopefully he can carry this on and fire us to glory."
