Fans are getting it wrong by calling Champions League finalists Inter Milan
Inter Milan are out to cause the upset of the season in the Champions League final against Manchester City – but might have to do so while being called the wrong name.
Founded way back in 1908 as Football Club Internazionale, the addition of Milan to their name in English speaking countries is not by their own design.
In fact, Inter started as a breakaway club from their rivals, who were founded in 1899 as the Milan Football and Cricket Club.
Their social media handles of simply @Inter and website of Inter.it tell the full story, with their red and black rivals going by just Milan, without the AC, in their native Italy.

However, the club badge does including reference to their location, with the letters FCIM on their logo until a change in style back in 2021.
Since then, just the letters IM sit prominently on the design, but it's unlikely you'll hear anyone in Italy call them anything but Inter.
Similar examples are Portuguese giants Sporting being referred to as Sporting Lisbon abroad, as well as Athletic Club being referred to as Athletic Bilbao.

The misrepresentation will be the last thing on the minds of fans and players as they line up against City in Istanbul as they look to win a fourth major European crown.
Previous triumphs came in 1964, 1965 and 2010, the latter of which secured a historic treble under Jose Mourinho.
Since that victory, Inter have faltered in Europe and won only one Serie A title, with City winning three Premier League titles in a row but awaiting a maiden European Cup.
Simone Inzaghi has said of the task at hand: "We know what kind of match to expect tomorrow, we know what kind of match we have to play. We know that Manchester City right now is probably the best team in the world.
"They have proved so in being defeated very few times, but we are aware of our Champions League campaign, we are proud of what we have done.
"We will do out best to play the final with high concentration, we must make no mistakes because our opponents are very very strong."
