Liverpool midfielder Fabinho has heaped praise on new Manchester United signing Casemiro, while he has launched a staunch defence of Fred and said he ‘doesn’t understand the criticisms’ the midfielder receives.

Erik ten Hag’s side confirmed on Friday that they had reached an agreement with Real Madrid for the £70million signing of five-time Champions League winner Casemiro.

He bid farewell to Los Blancos in an emotional press conference on Monday and will be presented to the Old Trafford faithful ahead of tonight’s clash with Liverpool.

The Liverpool star also launched a staunch defence of Fred who is heavily criticised for United

And Fabinho, who is a compatriot of both Casmeiro and Fred, believes the addition of the former Madrid star is a brilliant piece of business by United.

Fabinho said: ‘I played with him in Real Madrid’s second team and with the national team.

‘He is a friend, we always have conversations and he is a good guy. Of course, he will be a good signing.

‘Casemiro is a smart guy, he is a good player, he is strong, he is good in the air, so it will not be hard for him to adapt to the Premier League.’

The Liverpool star has played with both Casemiro and Fred in the national team while the latter pair were preferred for the June friendlies against South Korea and Japan as Fabinho started on the bench.

Despite starting for Brazil, Fred, who joined United from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2018 for £52.5m, has faced significant criticism over the past few years from fans and pundits alike.

However, Fabinho, who himself arrived at Anfield from Monaco in the same summer for £43.7m, believes the stick is unfair.

He explained: ‘Sometimes I don’t really understand the criticisms with Fred because he is a regular player, he always plays good football.

‘In general Manchester United have not been successful in the last seasons so you try to find a solution or you try to put the fault on some of the players and sometimes I think Fred is that player.

‘But he is a good player, in the national team, he is always a starter, he always plays good and, yes, sometimes the player needs a little bit more confidence to play good.

‘Last season he played really good football, maybe he was one of the best United players.

‘This season United didn’t start really good but I hope Fred will play good and United will stay playing like this.’

Despite Fabinho’s kind words about the United and Brazil pair, he will be hoping to add further misery to their start to the season in tonight’s clash at Old Trafford.

Liverpool are still looking for their first win of the Premier League season, while the Red Devils are yet to pick up a point this campaign.
