Ex-Roma boss Fonseca ‘in frame’ to replace Bruce as Newcastle manager
Newcastle’s quest for a replacement for Steve Bruce is already underway – and they are reportedly considering Paulo Fonseca, formerly of AS Roma.
The Public Investment Funds (PIF)’s takeover of the club has meant that Bruce’s position as manager appears almost untenable with the new ownership looking to make a total revamp.
And the Daily Mirror has reported that a target as a Bruce replacement is Fonseca, someone who was heavily linked with a move to Tottenham earlier this year.
The young Portuguese coach also managed in Turkey for Shakhtar Donetsk, famously leading his side to beat Manchester City during the 2017/18 Champions League season.
During his time in Turkey, the Mozambique-born manager won three leagues and cup Ukrainian doubles.
With Roma, meanwhile, he led his club to fifth in the table and took them into the semifinals of the Europa League, before leaving in May of last year.
But the coach is just one of the names being considered at St James’ Park following the club’s huge takeover on Thursday by PIF.
The Mirror, too, report that Steven Gerrard is among those being considered for the job. The Liverpool legend has managed Rangers since 2018 and guided them to win last season’s Scottish Premiership.
The decision of Bruce’s future, ultimately lies with Newcastle’s new board, co-owner Amanda Staveley, PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan, and Jamie Reuben.

Newcastle are still without a win in their entire season, are out of the Carabao Cup, and sit bottom of the Premier League, on just three points.
Bruce recently admitted that his future at Newcastle was uncertain.
“I want to continue, I’d like the chance to show the new owners what I can do, but you have to be realistic and they may well want a new manager to launch things for them," Bruce told the Telegraph.
"New owners normally want a new manager. I’ve been around long enough to understand that.”
