Ex-Man Utd forward Diego Forlan names Paul Scholes his “greatest” team-mate
Ex-Manchester United’s striker Diego Forlan has revealed his “greatest” teammate at Old Trafford was Paul Scholes.
The Uruguayan was speaking ahead of the Red Devils’ Champions League group stage clash with Villarreal, another side he represented during his 21-year career.
Forlan spent two-and-a-half of those with United between 2002 and 2004, scoring 17 goals while predominantly playing as a back-up striker to the imperious Ruud van Nistelrooy.
While his best years came at Villarreal and later Atletico Madrid, Forlan managed to win a Premier League title in the 2002/03 season in a star-studded United squad that included the likes of David Beckham and Ryan Giggs.
But when quizzed on the greatest footballer he ever played alongside, the 42-year-old heaped praised on legendary midfielder Paul Scholes.
Speaking to The Playbook, Forlan said: “One of the greatest players I played with is Paul Scholes. A great player.
“He could play as a midfielder, also as an attacker, different roles… and he was always doing things great.
“I had the opportunity to play with him and he was definitely a great player.”

Scholes won 11 league titles with United throughout his excellent career and is regarded by many as one of the greatest English midfielders ever.
The BT Sport pundit, however, has been consistently critical of the current Man United squad this season, who are level on points with Villarreal ahead of their visit to Spain.
The Red Devils have scraped results in this year’s Champions League campaign courtesy of Cristiano Ronaldo’s late goals, but are now left with Michael Carrick as interim boss following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sacking.
United won the previous fixture in September after a 95th minute Ronaldo winner while Villarreal came out on top in the Europa League final earlier this year.
