Ex-Liverpool star who cost £15m training with National League side in pre-season

A former Liverpool winger looking to get his career back on track has been spotted training with a National League side Chesterfield.

Jordon Ibe was regarded as a hot prospect at Anfield a decade ago, with then-manager Brendan Rodgers tipping him for big things. However, after 58 appearances for the Reds – with loan spells at Birmingham and Derby – Ibe joined Bournemouth in 2016 for a fee of around £15m.

He struggled to live up to that price tag with the Cherries and rejoined Derby on a permanent basis in 2020. After leaving Pride Park by mutual consent in 2021, Ibe moved to Turkish second-tier side Adanaspor in January last year but left 10 months later.

He has been without a club since then and is currently training with Chesterfield, last season’s National League play-off final losers, during their pre-season training camp in Portugal.

It is unclear whether a deal for Ibe is in the offing but the Spireites have already made some impressive signings this summer, including that of former Wigan and Sunderland striker Will Grigg.

Plenty of fans are wishing Ibe well and are sure he would be a success in non-league football’s top tier.

“Imagine what a fully fit and focused Jordon Ibe would do to national league defenders,” said one.

Another said: “Jordan Ibe having a trial at Chesterfield is a bit of a mad one. He's had a rough time – hope he gets himself fit and healthy and playing again.”

Another urged: "Arm around him and some good man management, he’s an unreal signing for @ChesterfieldFC. Some quality business going on there. All the best for the upcoming season.”

A fourth said: “He was unreal when on loan at Derby, think he was struggling with mental health the last few years and it has halted his career. I hope he manages to get a full season in, thought he’d end up playing in the Prem. Hope he does well.”

A fifth added: “So desperately wanted it to work out for Jordon when he returned to Derby. He’s a player I genuinely feel for, really hope he finds his feet again and Chesterfield could be a great opportunity for him to flourish. He has such talent.”

Another fans declared: “Good luck to the lad. Felt for him a little here, I know he had his mental health issues.”
