Former jockey Tom Greenway has tragically died at the age of 38.

The Racing Post tweeted: "Racing in the north-west of England is in mourning for former jump jockey Tom Greenway, who has died at the age of 38."

Tributes flooded in on Twitter, with one saying: "I'll leave you with RIP my good friend Tom."

Another said: "I briefly knew Tom from NTDs, this news is so sad."

A fellow friend said: "In shock over the death of Tom Greenway. He's the reason you see so many Red Rum pic.

"He use to love the stories about RR He sent me this pic of him on RR.

"Wish I had been older to appreciate at the time just WHO my Grandfather(Red Rums Vet) had just given me the leg-up on RIP Tom."

The cause of death is not yet known.

Greenway rode in over 40 winners under rules when an amateur and a conditional.

His career almost fell short when he broke his neck in three places after he fell at Towcester aged 21, but he overcame the injury and returned.

The rider started out in point-to-points, joining Ginger McCain, before moving to Henrietta Knight's yard before enjoying a great period with Nigel Twiston-Davies. His most notable achievement there was riding a treble at Perth.

Outside of racing, he was a qualified plumber, and joined his brother with his property business after leaving the sport.

Lifelong friend Will Kinsey, a former amateur rider and trainer, said to Racing Post: "He rode a lot of winners and he came back from a broken neck – they called him the miracle man in the paper."

Donald McCain said to the same publication: "It's very sad. His grandfather Ted Greenway was Red Rum's vet and we've known Tom since he was tiny.

"He rode for me as a conditional and he was a good rider and a very nice lad."

Greenway is survived by his mother Janet and brother David. His funeral is reported to be held at 11.30am on Tuesday, November 16.
