Ex-City ace Danilo says it’s "not easy" to have good relationship with Guardiola

Former Manchester City star Danilo has criticised Pep Guardiola for being difficult to get along with.

The Brazilian defender moved to the Etihad from Real Madrid for £26.5million in 2017 but failed to nail down a first-team place.

He made just 60 appearances for City and left for Juventus in 2019 as part of a deal that saw Joao Cancelo move the other way.

Danilo has been a regular starter in Italy, playing 84 times in all competitions and scoring three goals.

The 30-year-old was asked about his relationship with Guardiola during his time at City in a recent interview – and he didn't hold back.

He told Italian publication Repubblica: "It's true it's not easy to have a good relationship with him (Guardiola)."

"He is never relaxed, he thinks about football all the time.

"I think at home, in the evening, he puts his wife on the couch as if she were a player on the pitch."

Danilo is not the first former Guardiola player to criticise the Catalan maverick.

Mario Mandzukic played under the current City boss at Bayern Munich and wasn't very complimentary after his exit.

"Guardiola disappointed me because he didn’t treat me with respect," Mandzukic told Sportske Novosti. in 2014.

"And it was twice as good when Jupp Heynckes was there.

"Would I sit down with Guardiola for a coffee? That is something that’s not going to happen.

"In my professional life, I don’t have to like everyone but if I feel negative energy coming from a person, then I try to avoid them."

Another ex-Bayern player, Jan Kirchhoff, enjoyed working with Guardiola but has acknowledged that it is not the same for everyone.

"In Munich, some critics were saying his man-management lacked empathy but that’s not the experience I had," Kirchhoff told The Athletic.

Guardiola's obsession with football is well-documented, and while it doesn't endear him to everyone, it has made him one of the finest managers of his generation, having tasted success with Barcelona, Bayern and City.
