Evra insists United are NOT ready to win the Premier League

Patrice Evra insists Man United are NOT ready to win the Premier League after being humiliated by Liverpool – as he praises Erik ten Hag for performing ‘miracles’ in a call for calm after the 7-0 hiding at Anfield

Patrice Evra has claimed he is not delusional enough to think Manchester United can win the Premier League this season after they suffered the joint-heaviest defeat in their history in a 7-0 mauling at the hands of rivals Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds ran riot in the second half at Anfield on Sunday, with Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo, and Mohamed Salah all netting twice before Roberto Firmino wrapped things up in the 7-0 victory.

Erik ten Hag’s high-flying United side were being tipped to win a potential quadruple following their Carabao Cup triumph at Wembley, but Evra insists the Premier League title is out of reach.

Evra said on Rio Ferdinand’s FIVE podcast: ‘I never got carried away. With this team, they are going in the right direction, but they are not yet ready [to win the Premier League]. I am not delusional.

‘As a United fan, I will think about the title, but I will be honest with you, I never think United will be able to win [this season], because it is a process.’

While United icon Evra acknowledges United are a team in transition and claims they are not ready to challenge the likes of Arsenal and Man City for the title just yet, he was full of praise for Ten Hag and the work the Dutchman has done so far.

Evra, 41, said: ‘Ten Hag is already doing some miracles so people forget where we come from. We already have a trophy.

‘Of course, that is a massive loss – seven goals is a lot and you can question the defence – but it is a million times harder to take against Liverpool. We cannot forget what this team is now doing.’

Ferdinand went on to label his beloved club’s thrashing as an ‘absolute massacre’ and told embarrassed stars to let the feeling of defeat ‘sink in’.

‘We’ve been pulverised,’ Ferdinand added.

‘That was a massacre. An absolute massacre at Anfield. That’s all you can call it. The players will be feeling embarrassed.’

Evra also joined a number of other former Manchester United players in criticising Bruno Fernandes’ body language in their 7-0 defeat.

Fernandes grew increasingly frustrated as the game progressed, with the club captain waving his arms around, falling theatrically to the floor and even appearing to push a linesman towards the end of the match.

Evra compared his behaviour to that of another fiery Red Devils midfielder, saying: ‘I love Bruno as a player, but this is not the first game has body language is like that. He needs to get rid of that.

‘Paul Pogba used to be like this at Juventus, and [Massimiliano] Allegri benched him because of that.’

Evra also compared to the incident to his time at the club. ‘When Nani wasn’t crossing the ball to Wayne [Rooney], he used to shout, and that’s when the fans start hating Nani,’ he said.

‘For me when I see this body language as a manager, they will not play in my time. No matter if they are good because this is disrespectful.’

The former left-back added that the result did not ‘surprise’ him because this ‘was not a strong United team’, and that ‘you recognise a strong United team when we are losing’.

Ferdinand agreed that the game should have been about ‘damage limitation’ after Liverpool stormed into the lead.

On Fernandes, he added: ‘I spoke to him last week and he’s aware of his waving his arms. It’s because he’s frustrated. He wants players to do better.

‘The way it transmits to teammates and fans doesn’t look great.’

United’s humiliated stars returned to training on Monday morning, less than 24 hours after their defeat with Ten Hag making his squad watch the 7-0 mauling back ‘to make them angry’ before putting on extra sessions with a Dutch psychologist in an attempt to rebuild confidence.

United face LaLiga outfit Real Betis visit Old Trafford in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 encounter on Thursday.
