Jamie Carragher has called for Gareth Southgate to drop captain Harry Kane for England’s Euro 2020 match against Czech Republic on Tuesday.

Southgate has already confirmed that Kane will start the match but Carragher believes the out of form Tottenham striker would benefit more from a rest ahead of the last-16 phase.

Writing in his Telegraph column, Carragher explained: ‘The days when converting a penalty or scoring a tap-in is considered “job done” are long over. Kane doing so against the Czech Republic will be no measure of form for the rest of the tournament unless the overall level improves.’

Jamie Carragher says Gareth Southgate should leave Harry Kane out of England v Czech Republic on Tuesday night in Euro 2020

Elsewhere, Carragher says Jack Grealish should start ahead of Phil Foden in attacking midfield

Elsewhere, Carragher has said Jack Grealish should start ahead of Phil Foden while Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson must also be in the line-up from the off.

‘It makes sense to bring in Harry Maguire to get him up to speed,’ Carragher said. ‘If Jordan Henderson is not involved on Tuesday, the question will have to be asked whether it made sense to include him in the squad.’

He suggested Henderson should play an hour alongside Declan Rice, with Kalvin Phillips dropping to the bench.

As for Grealish, Carragher said: ‘Grealish’s time has come. I was torn between playing Phil Foden more centrally or sticking with Mason Mount. Mount stays, for me. Sterling has to keep his place.’

Carragher said he disagrees with the clamour for Jadon Sancho to start for England

But the Liverpool hero has dismissed the cries for Borussia Dortmund attacker Jadon Sancho to start, saying: ‘ I do not understand the clamour for Jadon Sancho to start. Who for?

‘The nation is demanding Grealish, and how can Southgate drop Sterling after everything he has produced for England? He has arguably been the best player of the Southgate era. Sancho is yet to replicate his club form.’

Sterling is England’s only goalscorer at Euro 2020, netting the decisive goal in the 1-0 win over Croatia in their opening group match.
