Erik ten Hag’s Man Utd woes worsen as injured Casemiro to miss five key matches

What has gone wrong at Man Utd?

Manchester United have confirmed that midfielder Casemiro is set to spend a number of weeks on the sidelines through injury. The Brazilian suffered up a hamstring strain during the 3-0 Carabao Cup defeat to Newcastle in midweek and could even miss upcoming Premier League clashes with the Magpies and Chelsea.

Casemiro played the opening 45 minutes but did not re-emerge at half-time, prompting concerns that he had picked up another injury. Ten Hag confirmed the news after the game that he was forced off, before the club later issued a statement clarifying the nature and severity.

The statement read: “Casemiro will be out for several weeks due to a hamstring injury suffered during our Carabao Cup defeat to Newcastle United on Wednesday.

“The Brazilian midfielder was withdrawn at half-time due to the issue, and subsequent assessment has revealed a strain that will keep him out for a number of weeks.”

United’s next five games are crucial with Erik ten Hag already under pressure after a disappointing start to the season and he could be without Casemiro for all of them due to his hamstring injury.

Upcoming fixtures against Fulham, Copenhagen, Luton, Everton and Galatasaray are all to come this month and will likely decide Ten Hag’s future as there have been repeated calls for the Dutchman to lose his job.

Should Casemiro’s injury keep him out for longer than a month, he could also miss the remainder of United’s Champions League campaign and December’s high-profile league clashes with Newcastle, Chelsea and Liverpool.

Ten Hag had already confirmed that Casemiro would miss Saturday’s trip to Craven Cottage. “Just before half-time, he got an injury. That’s why we had to take him off,” the Dutchman said.

He then refused to say whether or not Casemiro would be able to return after the November international break, with United returning to action on November 26 away to Everton. “I can’t give an answer on that [now],” he added. “We have to wait 24 hours, but I think definitely for Saturday, he is out.”
