Erik ten Hag confirms duo to miss Liverpool clash and opens up on board position
‘The 7-0 was a freak result!’ | Jurgen Klopp previews Liverpool’s clash with Man Utd
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has confirmed that Harry Maguire and Anthony Martial won’t be available for Sunday’s Premier League trip to Liverpool. The weakened Red Devils face a daunting task as they travel to Anfield looking to avenge last season’s 7-0 humiliation.
United head to Merseyside with just one win and three defeats from their previous five games, including a 3-0 home loss to AFC Bournemouth last time out in the league.
In contrast, Jurgen Klopp’s side are flying. Liverpool are top of the table, having lost just once in the league this season and winning all seven games at Anfield.
Ten Hag is under pressure after United’s 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich on Tuesday confirmed the club’s worst-ever Champions League campaign, crashing out of Europe rock bottom of Group A with just four points.
And his job to avoid another spanking at the hands of Liverpool has been made harder by two fresh absences, losing Maguire to a groin injury during the Bayern clash and Martial to injury.
However, the Dutchman has confirmed that Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford, who missed Tuesday’s defeat at Old Trafford, should be back in contention.
“Harry [Maguire] will not be available for the coming games, but we don’t think it’s long-term,” Ten Hag explained.

“Luke Shaw trained this morning, so we think he’s available for Sunday. Marcus Rashford will be back, [Anthony] Martial not.”
Maguire and Martial’s confirmed absences mean Ten Hag could be without 11 first-team players for Sunday’s north-west grudge match.
Captain Bruno Fernandes is suspended after receiving his fifth Premier League yellow card of the season in the dying embers of last week’s Bournemouth disaster.
Jadon Sancho remains exiled, while Victor Lindelof is carrying a knock but there may be hope he is ready to play. Amad Diallo is unlikely to be rushed back after only recently returning to training for the first time this term.
Casemiro, Tyrell Malacia, Lisandro Martinez, Christian Eriksen and Mason Mount are guaranteed to be ruled out through injury.

Many United supporters remained scarred by the seven-goal rout in March. However, Ten Hag insists it isn’t mentally affecting his players ahead of what could be a huge game for his future amid sack rumours.
He said: “I haven’t seen last season we were scared there. It was a bad experience, but it’s not similar. You start again.
“Last year, the first half, we played very decent, and we got hammered just after half-time, then we collapsed. That can’t happen, but it’s last year; it’s a different team and different players for a part, at least.
“We won’t ignore it, but we’ll be confident, and we have to fight, challenge and go there with the idea to prepare to win.”
