City weigh up move for Rice but have concerns over his playing style

Manchester City weigh up whether to make a move for Declan Rice this summer, but Pep Guardiola’s side have concerns his playing style will impact Rodri… while Arsenal are wary of the price of any potential deal with West Ham

  • Declan Rice has enjoyed another impressive campaign for West Ham this season
  • The England star is expected to be sold for more than £100m in the summer
  • Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal have all shown an interest

Manchester City have discussed the merits of making a move for West Ham skipper Declan Rice this summer – but have concerns over his playing style.

Rice, 24, has been a star man for the Hammers ever since breaking through in 2017, racking up 240 appearances for the club.

He was appointed as club captain in 2022 and has also won 41 caps for England.

However, given his superb displays he is widely expected to depart at the end of the season with his contract set to expire next summer – although the club do have the option of extending this by a year.

The Hammers are expected to demand in excess of £100m for the midfielder and Mail Sport understands City have discussed Rice as a potential transfer option.

However, they have concerns Rice’s playing style could cut across that of Rodri

However, they have concerns that his style could cut across that of Rodri who is a hugely instrumental figure to Pep Guardiola’s side.

The Spaniard operates at the base of midfield and provides the freedom for attacking players like Kevin de Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan to push further forward.

Arsenal have been considered favourites for Rice’s signature as Mikel Arteta looks to add top quality additions to their squad this summer after their season has been derailed in recent weeks.

However, the Gunners have concerns over price of any potential deal.

Meanwhile, Manchester United are firm admirers of Rice too and have players such as Scott McTominay who West Ham would consider as part of a £120m package.

Rice will leave the London Stadium on good terms, with the homegrown hero having joined the club aged 14 after being released by Chelsea.

He has been an integral member of David Moyes’s side over recent years as they have reached the semi-finals of the Europa League and the Europa Conference League in successive seasons.

Despite a tricky league campaign this year, they have picked up form over the past few months and are on the verge of securing their Premier League status for next season.
