Erik ten Hag approves Cristiano Ronaldo exit with star not part of Man Utd plans

Erik ten Hag has given Cristiano Ronaldo the green light to leave Manchester United this summer.

Ten Hag is poised to become the next United manager after agreeing a deal in principle with club bosses. And the Dutchman has sanctioned the departure of Ronaldo – after making it clear the United legend will not be part of his long term plans at Old Trafford.

The news will stun United fans, who still consider Ronaldo to be an iconic figure at the club despite his struggles this season. Supporters were ecstatic last summer when Ronaldo, 37, snubbed rivals Manchester City to make a stunning return to United from Juventus in a £12million deal. He was expected to help the fallen giants challenge for trophies again, but his second spell has turned into a nightmare.

United have never been in the title race and will end this season without silverware for the fifth time in a row. Ronaldo has the option to extend his United contract by an extra 12 months, but has been considering his future since the start of 2022 after becoming disillusioned with life back at Old Trafford.

Despite scoring 18 goals, he has netted just four times in his last 13 appearances and has not always found himself in Ralf Rangnick's starting line-up.

It is understood he met agent Jorge Mendes back in Portugal at the end of last month to take stock of what his options are ahead of next season, and will not be short of offers.

But it appears his decision to leave United has now been made for him, with Ten Hag making it clear to United chiefs that Ronaldo's age and luxury status means he will not be suited to the style of play and approach he will look to implement moving forward, once he takes charge in June.
