Erik ten Hag says he’s NOT satisfied with Man United’s season despite securing a return to the Champions League and a potential domestic cup double as he insists his side ‘HAVE to do better’

Erik ten Hag says that Manchester United must improve on his first season at Old Trafford despite securing a return to the Champions League and chasing a domestic cup double.

United face Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley on Saturday having already lifted the Carabao Cup and finished third in the Premier League.

It’s a huge improvement on the situation Ten Hag inherited when he arrived from Ajax last summer, but the Dutchman insists a club of United’s stature needs to aim higher.

Speaking at United’s end-of-season awards dinner on Monday night, Ten Hag said: ‘We have seen it before the season, after the start of the season, and then where we came from – we are happy, we are in the right direction, but satisfied? No, we are not.

‘We have to do better, that’s always the case. We have a foundation, we have a good base. But we have to do better. This season, we still have one game to go and it’s a great opportunity to make the next big step.

United also won the Carabao Cup and could secure a domestic double on Saturday

‘But then, after summer, we have to increase our standards, to do even better. And you know, the competition is tough, our competitors will also reach higher levels. So we have to do at least the same, but I don’t think it’s good enough. You have to do much better.

‘We don’t want to stay here. We want to go higher up, we want to increase our levels and we want to compete for the top two. So we have to demand more and increase our levels.’

Asked if United are the biggest club in the world, Ten Hag replied: ‘I think so. I knew this when we were on tour when we were coming to Bangkok, to Melbourne, everywhere. Everyone is supporting you. They are so crazy about Manchester United all over the world.

‘The fanbase is huge and that must give you a really strong feeling, a good feeling, as a player, as a coach, everyone working for this club. But you also have to take responsibility for that and to deliver performances.’
