Sweden came from behind to end Spain’s 66-game unbeaten run in World Cup qualifying with a 2-1 victory in Stockholm, thanks to golas from Alexander Isak and Viktor Claesson.

Carlos Soler had put the hosts ahead in the fourth minute but Isak equalised virtually from the restart before Claesson netted what proved to be the winner just before the hour mark.

It was Spain’s first defeating World Cup qualifying for 28 years and Enrique bemoaned his side for not winning their battles, especially in midfield

‘We have lost too many duels and they have generated more transitions’, he said after the game, as quoted by Diario AS.

‘We tried to change players and generate more danger.

‘It was not a bad game, we had ambition and created many chances but we have lost many duels in midfield. And with the transitions they have done us a lot of damage.

It was Spain’s first defeating World Cup qualifying for 28 years after 52 wins and 14 draws

‘Right now Sweden are top of the group and we must react.’

The last team to beat Spain in World Cup qualifying was Sweden’s Scandinavian rivals Denmark, who beat them 1-0 in 1993.

In their unbeaten run, Spain picked up 52 victories and 14 draws.

Sweden’s win puts them top of their qualifying group with three wins from three games.

Spain have played a game more and were also held to a draw by Greece back in March.
