Mason Mount rejected a contract extension at Chelsea worth more than £200,000 a week before he left for Qatar, according to reports. The midfielder’s current deal at Stamford Bridge expires at the end of next season.

Mount has started both of England’s matches at the World Cup to date. He struggled in the goalless draw against the USA on Friday.

The 23-year-old is a regular for club and country and has remained a key member of Graham Potter’s Blues side since his appointment in September. But speculation over his future refuses to go away despite club football taking a back seat for a number of weeks.

Mount has previously been reported to have been in talks over a new deal. But the Mail now claims he has rejected a mammoth offer of over £200,000 a week.

Mount is one of the lower earners in Potter’s squad, on around £85,000 a week. But an offer of almost two-and-a-half times that is not deemed enough by his representatives.

It is claimed Mount wants to be on a similar salary level to Chelsea team-mate Raheem Sterling. The winger earns around £300,000 each week following his summer arrival from Manchester City.

Chelsea wanted to wrap up a deal with Mount quickly after securing Reece James’ long-term future earlier this season. However, they have been unable to strike an agreement.

Mount’s value will only decrease as his contract continues to run down. Liverpool and Juventus are both named as clubs keeping an eye on his situation.

Mount has featured in all 14 of Chelsea’s Premier League matches so far this season, starting all but one. He has just two goals and two assists to his name and failed to net in the Champions League group stage.

Mount has played as one of the midfield three in England’s matches against Iran and USA. But former Three Lions right-back says he would prefer to see Phil Foden in that position.

Parket told Futbin: “I wouldn’t play Mason Mount as the attacking midfielder, because he is not really attacking. I would definitely play with Phil Foden as the attacking midfielder for England.

“Phil Foden plays for Pep Guardiola, which means he isn’t lazy. If you want to have a midfielder that can create chances and score goals, Foden is the one you should go with.

“He is really the attacking midfielder for the future for England and he is the only England player that could play for every single top team in Europe and fit well in.”
