Though England fans won’t want to hear it, there remains a possibility that the national side will find themselves in a penalty shootout during the World Cup.

Talk about a spot-kick shootout have been rife in the build-up to England’s round of 16 tie against Senegal – which both nations confident in their chances of success.

In preparations for the worst-case scenario, Sportsmail’s experts have taken their picks on who should be called upon for England in the case of a penalty shootout.

Sportsmail’s experts take their picks on who should step up for England in a penalty shootout

CHRIS SUTTON

1. Kane 2. Rashford 3. Maguire 4. Trippier 5. Pickford

Harry Kane first, like he was at Euro 2020 and the 2018 World Cup. Shall I shock you?

I wouldn’t say no to Jordan Pickford taking the fifth, like he did against Switzerland in 2019. Keepers are brilliant penalty takers.

If Pickford fancies it and has been burying them in training, let him have it!

IAN LADYMAN

1. Kane 2. Rice 3. Rashford 4 Sterling 5. Henderson

Shootouts are partly about seizing the initiative. Kane first gives England the best chance of a good start.

The rest of my line-up speaks of big-game know-how.

Eric Dier hit the crucial one against Colombia in 2018, but putting players on to take penalties backfired in the Euro 2020 final, so maybe not.

DOMINIC KING

1. Kane 2. Rice 3. Rashford 4. Maguire 5. Grealish

This list is on the assumption they are on the pitch at full-time.

I would have no issue with Marcus Rashford taking one and Harry Maguire is on the list because of the spot-kick he took against Italy.

England’s planning for penalties has been meticulous. They will not fail for a lack of preparation.
