England receive trophy from FIFA – despite World Cup quarter-final exit

Football did come home for England, in a way, as the Three Lions won the FIFA World Cup Fair Play Trophy.

Of course, it was not the big one, as Lionel Messi was the one who was able to lift the trophy for Argentina. The Three Lions will have to wait until the 2026 World Cup held across the United States, Canada, and Mexico for their next opportunity.

The next World Cup will mark exactly 60 years since England last won the World Cup on that glorious afternoon at Wembley. However, while it was not the one everybody wants, gold will be coming back to England.

Gareth Southgate’s side were awarded the FIFA World Cup fair play award for having the best disciplinary record. England only picked up one yellow card throughout the whole tournament.

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire was the only England star to be cautioned after he caught French star Antoine Griezmann with a loose elbow during their quarter-final exit. Sadly, one imagines the award will do very little to ease the pain from another World Cup exit.

France edged their way past the Three Lions during a dramatic quarter-final clash between the familiar rivals. Aurelien Tchouameni’s fine strike from 25 yards and late header from Olivier Giroud, either side of a Harry Kane penalty secured the victory for Didier Deschamps’ side.

Kane did have the opportunity to level when the score was 2-1 but his second penalty of the evening was blazed over the crossbar. England will need to regroup and rebuild when they face Italy in their first match of their Euro 2024 qualification campaign.

And Southgate will lead England’s charge for Euro 2024, after confirming his decision to remain in the Three Lions’ hotseat. He seemingly threw his future into doubt when he said he wanted time to reflect on the tournament exit and not make any rash decisions.

However, he barely needed a week to ponder the decision over as he confirmed his intention to remain with the Three Lions. He will certainly be hoping his decision will yield more than the Fair Play award.
