The introduction of Jordan Henderson as England chased a goal against the United States led to a flurry of criticism from fans.

England produced a lackluster display in their second Group B game and with his first substitutions boss Gareth Southgate elected for the Liverpool captain and Man City’s Jack Grealish.

Jude Bellingham, the Borussia Dortmund starlet who was one of England’s star men in their opening 6-2 win over Iran, made way for Henderson.

‘I’m not exaggerating, the whole pub just booed when Henderson came on screen,’ one bemused fan tweeted.

Another added: ‘We need to score… so he brings on Henderson.’

Fans on social media questioned the logic of Henderson coming on when needing a goal

One disgruntled Manchester United fan tweeted: ‘I don’t know how you can view this match and think “ah yes Jordan Henderson will change the balance of this game”.’

There were loud calls for Grealish to be introduced, as he was for Raheem Sterling, and Phil Foden.

The Man City playmaker is England’s ‘most talented player’, according to Michael Owen, but Southgate picked Grealish, Henderson and Man United’s Marcus Rashford to come on ahead of him on Friday.

It was a monumental appearance for Henderson, as he became the fourth Englishman to play at six major tournaments.

The Liverpool midfielder joined Sol Campbell, Steven Gerrard and Wayne Rooney in the honour.

Henderson could do little to inspire a goal for England as they finished 0-0 in a disappointing display that means they are yet to secure passage through to the last-16.

They remain top of Group B on four points, with Iran second on three, the USA third with two and Wales bottom of the group with one point from two games.

England will now play Wales in their final group game and they will need to avoid a four-goal defeat on Tuesday to qualify for the knockout stages.
