England fans furious as VAR ‘doesn’t even check’ Raheem Sterling penalty shout

England were held to a 0-0 draw in their Euro 2020 showdown with Scotland on Friday night – but Three Lions fans felt they were denied a clear penalty.

Gareth Southgate's men couldn't break their old rivals down at Wembley, while the visitors also squandered a number of decent opportunities themselves.

A 0-0 stalemate was arguably a fair result in the grand scheme of things, and it also gives both sides the chance to progress in next week's final group outing.

However, England supporters were left seething on social media when Raheem Sterling was denied a penalty late on in the game.

The Manchester City star burst into the box and went down under a challenge from Andy Robertson, but referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz waved away his protests and resumed the game.

And to the dismay of fans watching on the box, there appeared to be no consultation with the VAR despite Sterling's appeal.

The Three Lions faithful quickly took to Twitter to express their frustrations, lambast the VAR officials for not giving the challenge a closer inspection.

One wrote: "Where was VAR? Know it was soft, but Robertson just stamped on Sterlings foot. Clear penalty."

Another put: "Surely that’s a pen. Robertson stands on the top of Sterling’s foot. Where’s VAR?"

A third commented: "How was that not a penalty? Sterling clearly had his foot trod on when shown on the replays?? #VAR didn’t even check it? I’m baffled as I’ve seen some dodgy decisions during this Comp."

Another said: "If VAR look at that Sterling incident it's a nailed on pen. Strange".

While a fifth supporter pointed out: "VAR didn’t even check a pretty contentious decision. Why’s Sterling not been booked for simulation if Lahoz (bad ref) was so sure? That’s a decision on reputation and bias."

England will now turn their attention to Tuesday's final group outing against Czech Republic on Tuesday night.
