Emi Martinez's agent fuels transfer speculation after Argentina heroics
The agent of Aston Villa star Emi Martinez admits his client would be interested in a move to Italy following his heroics for Argentina at the World Cup.
The 30-year-old saved two penalties in a shootout as Argentina got their hands on the World Cup for the first time since victory in Mexico in 1986.
Martinez was crucial in Argentina’s Copa America win in 2021 and his stock has risen even higher following an impressive World Cup campaign.
The former Arsenal man joined Aston Villa in 2020 for a fee of £20m, after making just 38 appearances during a decade at the Emirates.
Martinez didn’t make his international debut until 2021 but he’s won the two biggest prizes during his 26 appearances for Argentina.
The goalkeeper’s stock has never been higher following his performances in Qatar and that’s inevitably seen him linked with a move away from Villa Park.
The likes of Juventus, Inter Milan, Bayern Munich and Chelsea are all on the lookout for a new goalkeeper.
And, when asked by Italian publication tuttomercatoweb if Martinez would be open to a move to Serie A, the goalkeeper’s agent admitted he would.
‘Today there are few teams that can afford a goalkeeper like him,’ said Gustavo Goni.
‘But Serie A, well, why not? He is clearly aiming high, for the Champions League’.
Martinez has been criticised for his actions following the final whistle in Doha on Sunday.
The Argentina made a lewd gesture when he was presented with the Golden Glove award but Goni says it was just an ‘impulse’ reaction.
‘It’s football stuff, an impulsive reaction,’ he said.
‘It’s more important to talk about the decisive save a few minutes from the end. He has shown great skills.’
