Emery targeting Sevilla transfer chief Monchi at Aston Villa

Aston Villa are eyeing a swoop for Sevilla transfer chief Monchi at boss Unai Emery’s request after Barcelona’s Mateu Alemany turned down role last month

Unai Emery is targeting legendary Sevilla transfer chief Monchi for a senior role at ambitious Aston Villa.

Villa boss Emery has carte blanche to shape first-team affairs as he sees fit and after being turned down by Barcelona director Mateu Alemany last month, Villa now look set to turn to Monchi.

Reports in Spain on Wednesday indicated Villa were preparing an offer for Monchi, who is thought to earn about £4million a year at Sevilla.

Monchi, 54, has been at Sevilla since 2000, save a two-year spell at Roma from 2017-19. He nearly joined Arsenal in 2019, only to choose to go back to Sevilla after leaving Roma.

Under Monchi’s guidance, Sevilla made a series of superb low-cost signings who were sold on at significant profit.

Monchi signed and helped develop several high-profile names such as Jules Kounde at Sevilla

Brazilian star Dani Alves and Croatian midfielder Ivan Rakitic are perhaps the most famous, though Villa paid £30m for defender Diego Carlos a year ago – a £15m profit for Sevilla.

He also developed a youth system that produced Sergio Ramos, one of the most successful players of the modern era.

It remains to be seen whether Monchi, whose golden touch has slightly lost its sparkle in recent times, would accept a move to the Premier League.

He has a level of control at Sevilla that few enjoy elsewhere and if he were to leave, he would be turning his back on a Champions League campaign.

Yet he would also leave on a high. Sevilla won their fifth Europa League title against Roma on May 27, having also won the trophy twice when it was called the UEFA Cup.
