‘Embarrassing’ Jakub Kiwior told ‘get up and defend like life depends on it’

Jamie Carragher has stuck the knife into Arsenal defender Jakub Kiwior amid debate over a possible foul in the build-up to Brighton's opening goal.

Any hopes the Gunners had of winning the Premier League were all but extinguished following their 3-0 defeat to Roberto De Zerbi's impervious Seagulls at the Emirates on Sunday.

Julio Enciso gave the visitors the lead on 51 minutes but some felt it shouldn't have stood following a clash between Brighton forward Evan Ferguson and Kiwior which resulted in the Polish defender's boot coming loose.

Kiwior immediately knelt down to reaffix his boot, allowing Enciso, who was left unmarked just a few yards out, to nod home after the ball was crossed into the box.

After the match, Jamie Carragher tweeted: "It was a embarrassing Kiwior stayed down whether it was a foul or not (it wasn’t) there was very little wrong with him. Get up and defend like your life depends on it."

During the post-match analysis, Carragher's Sky Sports' colleagues Gary Neville and Roy Keane agreed, with Neville asking: "Could he not have just got up and [mimes heading the ball]? He wasn't that injured because he was sprinting with [Kaoru] Mitoma to the corner after the kick off."

Micah Richards, however, defended Kiwior's actions, much to the dissatisfaction of Keane. "You've got no boot, how was he supposed to jump?" the ex-Manchester City defender asked, to which Keane responded: "You talk about putting your body on the line, it's last ditch stuff, you don't stay down like that."

Arsenal fell apart in the dying minutes of the game, with Deniz Undav netting Brighton's second on 86 minutes and Pervis Estupinan grabbing a third deep into injury time.

The result leaves Mikel Arteta's side four points behind Manchester City, who have a game in hand, heading into the final couple of weeks of the season. Brighton meanwhile have moved ahead of Tottenham into fifth, and are still in with a chance of qualifying for European football next season.
