EFL stadium that last hosted match in 2008 still standing after being abandoned

It hosted football for over a century – but the Millmoor Ground is now an abandoned site growing increasingly run down.

Originally the home of Rotherham County between 1907 and 1925, it was where Rotherham United played for 83 years after the merger with rivals Rotherham Town. The Millers departed in 2008 and now play in New York… well the New York Stadium.

Talks between the club and then-owner Ken Booth broke down 15 years ago, and since then the stadium has remained unused. Recent images show overgrown plants along the sidelines and in the stands and graffiti across the walls.

Millmoor was used as far back as the 19th century, with Rotherham Church Institute playing at the ground in the Sheffield Association League. Greyhound racing also took place there for a brief two-year stint in the 1930s.

The ground held its record attendance of 25,170 when Rotherham faced Sheffield United in 1952, but went on to officially have a capacity of 8,300 after multiple renovations.

It played host to a whole host of memorable moments in the club's history, including Alan Lee's late goal against Brentford which secured promotion in April 2001.

A year earlier there had been a very dark day, however, when Swansea City fan Terry Coles was killed in an incident involving a police horse on a single-lane track just behind the Millmoor Lane stand.

Plans were in place for the Main stand to be redeveloped in the early noughties to increase the capacity past the 10k mark, with a scheduled finish date of 2006.

But it was never completed and remains half-built to this day. After leaving, Rotherham spent four years at the athletics Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield before moving into their new community stadium. The AESSEAL New York Stadium is just half a mile from Millmoor.
