EFL referee was cornered in tunnel by Rochdale ‘pie man’ for calling off match

Former EFL referee Kevin Lynch once bit off more than he could chew with the "Rochdale pie man".

Lynch, who was an official for over 30 years, found himself having to call off a Rochdale fixture one Boxing Day. But despite Lynch describing the water-logged pitch as having ducks swimming about on it, one Rochdale fan was left fuming as he couldn't shift his pies.

Speaking on the Undr the Cosh podcast, Lynch said: "So, half-past-nine on Boxing Day morning, the secretary rings me and says 'look, I think the pitch is okay, but the chairman's rolled in and he's not happy, and he won't open the gates until you say we're definitely playing'.

"So I get down to the side of the pitch, look to my left, huge pools of water, some ducks having a swim, nothing promising.

"Look to my right, huge sheets of ice, more ducks have a skate; secretary says, 'what do you think'? I said, 'I think we'll come back in April on a nice spring evening because you can't play on this'.

However, there was another onlooker at the side of the pitch, and he wasn't too happy with Lynch once the news filtered through that the game was set to be cancelled.

On his way out of the ground, Lynch was stopped by the "Rochdale pie man" who was fuming he couldn't shift his stock.

"He says, 'I'm the Rochdale pie man, did you notice a white transit van in the car park'? I said, 'yeah I did, why'? He says, 'do you know what's in it'? I said, 'I haven't got a clue'. He says 'in my van I've got 5,500 meat and potato pies, and rumour has it you've just called this f***ing game off'."

"He says, 'do you realise I've got a wife and four kids to support', I said, 'well they won't go hungry for a few days with all those f***ing pies'. However, the pie man got the last laugh after he kept some from Boxing Day only to produce them to Lynch when the fixture went ahead.
