EFL referee subs himself off after falling over and missing potential goal

Referee Robert Lewis has had better afternoons in football following Saturday's debacle-laden match between Lincoln and Charlton.

The League One clash ended 0-0 with little goalmouth action to talk about. Instead, all eyes were on the match official – who missed an integral part of the game in the opening 30 minutes.

After clearing the ball, Charlton were on the break where Miles Leaburn's strike crept under Carl Rushworth and there was an indication that the ball had crossed the line. However, the referee was nowhere to be seen.

He was miles behind the play, having fallen over following a collision with Steven Sessegnon. The linesman failed to make a decision and the two officials had a long conversation before deciding they could not give a goal.

Just five minutes later and with the Addicks in possession, the referee blew his whistle once again leaving many heads being scratched. However, it became apparent that the fall had taken quite the toll on Lewis, who had to sub himself off as a result.

The game ended 0-0, much to Charlton's frustration – who believe they had a goal chalked off because of the referee's tumble. But the pints were shared instead, leaving both clubs in difficult positions still.

Lincoln find themselves 16th in League One while Charlton are 18th and relegation troubles might be present in their minds after a tough start to the season. Addicks boss Garner was less than pleased with the officiating after his side went eight games without a win.

He said: “We had opportunities, we had the 3v1 break in the first half, we had penalty decisions that we don’t get, I don’t know if it went over the line or not, but we’ve had no rub of the green, no luck, but we need to work, improve and push to get three points on Tuesday night.”
