Ederson was badly at fault for Vinicius Jnr’s goal against Manchester City, according to specialist goalkeeping analyst – who claims he put in an ‘uncharacteristically weak’ display in Champions League

- The analyst believes Ederson was too hesitant in closing down the forward
- Harrison’s work has won high praise from Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher
Ederson’s role in Real Madrid’s second goal against Manchester City during their Champions League semi-final has been criticised by a goalkeeping analyst as ‘uncharacteristically weak’.
Vinicius Junior’s strike to pull the game back to 3-2 in City’s favour on Tuesday night had many raving over the Brazilian’s skill to create the chance having left Fernandinho trailing on the halfway line before cantering into the box and slotting home past the onrushing keeper.
But analyst John Harrison, who has a Cambridge astronomy PhD, believes the City keeper could have done more to keep out the strike during the enthralling 4-3 win for the home side at the Etihad Stadium.
Goalkeeping analyst John Harrison has broken down how Ederson blundered on Tuesday
On his Twitter account, Harrison broke down step-by-step how Ederson could have better dealt with Vinicius Junior after he made his way into the City penalty area.
He wrote: ‘Ederson is usually exceptional vs close range 1v1s but he was uncharacteristically weak vs Vini.
‘Ederson correctly holds deep for Vini’s first touch in the box but he needs to start closing the space once Vini takes the second touch! Waiting till the third touch is too late!

Harrison’s analysis has earned rave reviews recently, most notably from Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher.
The former Liverpool defender sounded out Harrison’s analysis over Liverpool stopper Alisson and how he has been dealing with one-on-one situations.
Carragher gave a shout out to Harrison on Monday Night Football, before jokingly claiming he will use anyone to back up his claims after saying: ‘John, thank you. I don’t just use Sky or Opta I will use anybody in the world who will prove me right. Thanks John boy.’
Harrison responded to Carragher’s praise by tweeting: ‘Cheers for the shoutout Carragher! It’s a dream come true to have my bespoke 1v1 modelling on #MNF to highlighting how important Alisson is to Liverpool!

Ederson was also beaten by a Panenka penalty during the Champions League tie on Tuesday
‘Understanding 1v1s & detailed 1v1 modelling is so important to both GKs & strikers given most seasons 33 per cent of all goals are 1v1s!’
Ederson struggled to contain Madrid’s attacks throughout the evening despite goals from Kevin de Bruyne, Gabriel Jesus, Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva giving Pep Guardiola’s side three points.
While City were 2-0 up, he was caught out by a precise low volleyed finish by Karim Benzema that trickled into the bottom corner during the first half.
He was also made to look a little foolish eight minutes from time by the veteran Madrid striker, after reacting to early to his spot-kick that the striker calmly chipped down the centre in Panenka style to round off the scoring in the first leg.
