Eddie Howe admits that Newcastle were big admirers of Liverpool’s new playmaker Dominik Szoboszlai but the £60million asking price was too expensive for them.
Newcastle tracked the Hungarian last season as he scored 10 times for RB Leipzig and he was a summer target.
But Howe preferred to invest the bulk of the club’s budget on Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali for £52m.
The 22-year-old plays against Newcastle at St James’ Park this afternoon, with the home manager aware of the threat he will pose.
‘We liked him,’ said Howe. ‘He’s had a very good start to his career.

However, the midfielder ended up at Liverpool after they paid his £60million release clause
‘He’s captain of his country at a really young age, and that tells you about his mentality.
‘He’s a good technical player. It would have been quite an expensive purchase for us, so there is lots that goes into every transfer. But he is certainly one that we liked.’
Howe’s Newcastle face Liverpool on Sunday as they look to lay down a marker in the Premier League.
The Magpies finished above Jurgen Klopp’s men and in the Champions League spots last year but after defeat to Manchester City last time out, a win is more important than ever.
Szoboszlai will face the club that he could have ended up at when he and his teammates travel to St James’ Park.
