Ed Woodward will copy Sir Alex Ferguson by choosing his own successor at Man Utd
Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward will make his last decision at Old Trafford by appointing his successor in a similar move to when manager Sir Alex Ferguson retired.
Woodward played a key role in the Glazer family takeover of the club in 2005 before being promoted to his current position from 2013.
That was the same year Ferguson announced he was stepping down before hand-picking David Moyes to take his seat for an unsuccessful spell of 10 months.
Woodward resigned from his role on Wednesday following the fallout from the proposal of a European Super League, which folded in 48 hours, and will leave the club at the end of the year.
“I am extremely proud to have served United and it has been an honour to work for the world’s greatest football club for the past 16 years," Woodward said in a club statement.
“The club is well positioned for the future and it will be difficult to walk away at the end of the year."
It has been speculated that Woodward was opposed to the Glazer's joining the European Super League but his position was already being considered as he has been largely absent since an attack on his Cheshire home by fans last year.
United's last three chiefs – Woodward, David Gill and Peter Kenyon – have all been internal appointments with some candidates for Woodward's replacement already dealing with big contracts.
The Manchester Evening News say John Murtough is now the point of contact for transfer activity while managing director Richard Arnold will negotiate any sponsorship deals.
Arnold is currently looking for a new kit and training ground sponsor with Aon's partnership ending this summer.
United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's contract is also up for renewal as his deal enters its final year.
