‘Amateur hour’: TV presenter’s blunder

Every television presenter finishes their career with a handful of live broadcast blunders — it’s an inevitability.

Unfortunately for Bridget McIntyre, one of those dreaded moments took place at the MCG on Saturday evening in front of 56,418 fans, the biggest crowd of the AFL season to date.

While conducting the post-match presentation following Melbourne’s 12.10 (82) to 6.12 (48) victory over the Richmond Tigers, McIntyre was tasked with announcing the recipient of the prestigious Frank ‘Checker’ Hughes Medal.

The award honoured the two-time premiership player and WWI veteran who represented Richmond between the wars. Hughes was also a long-serving VFL coach and member of the Australian Football Hall of Fame.

But there was just one problem.

“On behalf of both the Melbourne and Richmond football clubs, we are very proud tonight to present the inaugural Frank ‘Checker’ Hughes Medal,” McIntyre started on Channel 7’s coverage.

“The medal will tonight be presented by Jennifer Ellen — granddaughter of the great ‘Checker’ Hughes.

“Would you please join me … well I actually don’t know who the winner is. I think I need to know the winner. Who is it?”

McIntyre mustered a laugh as the confused Demons looked around at each other — a few jeers echoed around the iconic venue.

Thankfully, someone off-camera identified the medal recipient a few seconds later.

“Aw, it’s Petracca! Christian Petracca!” McIntyre cried.

Petracca contributed 38 disposals and seven tackles in the 34-point victory, also registering a goal and a behind.

The 25-year-old kept his acceptance speech short and succinct: “Firstly, it’s a massive honour playing on Anzac Day eve in front of a great crowd.

“I pay my respects to the men and women who fought for this great country, so thank you very much.”

While wrapping up the post-match ceremony, McIntyre sheepishly muttered: “Sorry about not knowing who that winner was.”

The Advocate’s Alex Fair tweeted: “That was slightly awkward … you hope that was the correct Christian that got the medal.”

The Herald Sun’s Lauren Wood posted: “Can’t say I’ve ever seen a presentation where the announcer … doesn’t know who to announce. But well recovered.”

That was … weird. #AFLDeesTigers

Pretty sure that's the last time she gets an MC job.

Melbourne announced itself as a premiership front runner as Richmond was left to lick its wounds in an Anzac Eve game that lived up to the billing.

The Dees’ victory sees them notch six consecutive wins to start a season for the first time since 1965.

Meanwhile, Richmond are 3-3 and haven’t suffered this many losses to this point in the season since 2016.

Melbourne will next face North Melbourne in Hobart, while Richmond will take on the undefeated Western Bulldogs at the MCG.
