Eagle-eyed fans spot how goal-line technology really works in Liverpool clash

Eagled-eyed football fans spotted the moment goal-line technology triggered the assistant referee's watch during the Merseyside Derby on Monday evening.

One fan tweeted: "27mins 05 sec into the game, the linesman is shown close up on TV cameras at Anfield, why is his GDS watch saying GOAL on it??" And fans were quick to work out it was because the ball went over the line after the whistle was blown.

The whistle had blown before Jordan Henderson lashed the ball home, causing the referee's watch to flash "goal" as cameras cut to the assistant.

Liverpool looked like their former selves on Monday evening as Mohamed Salah opened the scoring thanks to a lighting fast counterattack.

James Tarkowski had headed the ball across goal, but after it bounced off the post, Darwin Nunez set off down the other side of the pitch. Nunez squared the ball to Salah, who turned the ball past a stranded Jordan Pickford with ease.

Cody Gakpo doubled the lead in the second half, wrapping up the three points for the Reds.

Jurgen Klopp told the BBC: "It felt like us, it looked like us. The result is massive relief. Tonight everyone starts believing a little bit more again. We have to keep going.

"The performance was a statement for us that we can do this. We had to play our game and that was pretty much the case for 95 minutes and that's why deserved the points."
