Premier League scouts will have positive reports to return as they eye options at Euro 2020 – with one man standing out. Turkey and Italy thrashed out a competitive opening match at this summer’s tournament.
Manchester United could be one of many teams to up their interest in Sassuolo star Domenico Berardi after a stunning display against Turkey for Italy.
The winger was in top form as Roberto Mancini’s men opened the tournament with three points.
It was his impact that saw the first goal of the competition come through a Merih Demiral own-goal.
The Juventus defender could do nothing as Berardi, whose transfer situation with the Old Lady is mind-boggling, smashed one across the goalmouth in the second-half, forcing the ball into the Turkey man that trickled over the line.
And the attacker was involved for the second, constantly finding space on the right-hand side and dinking it over to Leonardo Spinazzola – whose effort was saved but rebounded in by Ciro Immobile.
The 26-year-old has spent his entire career playing for Sassuolo but had been on Juventus’ books for a number of seasons through a co-ownership arrangement before the Neroverdi reached an agreement with the Turin outfit to terminate that deal in 2015.
Berardi has just had his best season in front of goal, scoring 17 times in 30 appearances from the right-hand side.
It has rightfully earned him a spot in Mancini’s Italy team and this tournament could be the one where he finally fulfils his potential.
United have been interested in the forward before and could revive their efforts if he continues his fine performances this summer.
With Jadon Sancho being eyed, Berardi could be a much cheaper option – considering Borussia Dortmund are asking for close to £85m.
Everton are another team that were keen on the Italian, though with his countryman Carlo Ancelotti now at Real Madrid – it remains to be seen whether that interest is still there.
Berardi exploded onto the scene in 2013 when he scored 16 times in Serie A in 29 appearances as a youngster, following it up with another 15 the following season.
It has been a tough few years since as Sassuolo struggled in the table but he has back at a perfect time for his country – in a side that has seen Mancini spread the net.
The front three all play domestically for Napoli, Lazio and Sassuolo, with the country looking away from the natural ‘big three’ Juventus, Inter Milan and AC Milan.
