Tottenham chief Daniel Levy vetoes Jose Mourinho January transfer plan

Tottenham v Liverpool: Football Digest’s preview

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy backed Jose Mourinho last summer as the likes of Sergio Regulion, Gareth Bale and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg arrived in north London. However, Portuguese manager is not getting his own way in this transfer window.

ESPN claim Mourinho wants to let Dele Alli link up with his former boss Mauricio Pochettino at Paris Saint-Germain.

The 24-year-old has struggled to make the Spurs matchday squad this season and is seeking a transfer.

Alli has made over 200 appearances for Spurs since joining from MK Dons but his time at the club could be coming to an end.

Mourinho and Alli both agree it is best for the midfielder to begin the next chapter of his career.

Alli is desperate to make it into Gareth Southgate’s England squad this summer and he needs to be playing matches to do so.

However, Levy is reluctant to sell the England international, according to ESPN.

It would not be unlike Spurs to do business late in the transfer window and they have until 11pm on Monday to make their final decision.

Mourinho has recently been quizzed on Alli’s position and he claimed to want to keep the star at White Hart Lane.

“The transfer window is open and sometimes unexpected things can happen but I don’t expect it,” said Mourinho.

“I am saying that since the beginning of the transfer window I was not expecting anyone to leave.

“I was not expecting anyone to come. Until now 27th Jan, almost at the end… I don’t believe anything will happen but it’s open, still.

“Football is football.”

Tottenham take on Liverpool in the Premier League tonight and Mourinho is looking forward to locking horns with Jurgen Klopp – who is definitely not his mate.

“I’m not a friend of Jurgen as I never had time with Jurgen,” he said.

“Nuno, he was my player. Brendan worked in my club for a couple of years together.

“So when you have something in common, when you know the person well, you can say ‘I like him, he’s my friend’ or ‘I don’t like him, he’s not my friend’.

“With Jurgen, it’s five minutes before a match, five minutes after a match.

“What can I say about Jurgen?

“He’s a colleague that I respect, that I don’t have any problem with. He’s the same with me, no problems at all.”
