Dimitar Berbatov disagrees with Michael Owen about Manchester United striker signing

Man Utd: Neville hums tune as Red Devils go top

Manchester United legend Dimitar Berbatov disagrees with Michael Owen that the Red Devils must sign a new striker. Owen believes Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland is the perfect striker for United. Haaland has scored 35 goals in 34 games for Dortmund since his move from Red Bull Salzburg in January 2020.

Owen believes United need to sign a younger striker like Haaland and does not think Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood are the answers for a central role in the long term.

Owen told Stadium Astro: “At the moment, Manchester United have struggled to find that young player that’s going to take them all the way as a No 9.

“I think the one player out there that springs to mind that could be that type of player that could last for 10 years in their team and to stop them having to keep buying stop-gaps all the time is Haaland at Dortmund.

“I think he’s the player on everybody’s lips at the moment, so he is one player that I think could potentially be the No 9 that could last a long time.

“If he had an open cheque book, if I was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, I’d be playing [Rashford, Martial and Greenwood] in wider positions, and I’d probably try and buy someone like Haaland because that’s the future of your team for about 10 years.”

Berbatov agrees that Haaland is a top talent and would be a “great fit” for United.

However, the former Tottenham star believes, in Greenwood, United have the long-term solution up front.

Greenwood has played the majority of his first-team career to date as a right-winger but was a striker coming through the ranks at United.

Berbatov would like to see the teenager given a chance if United do not sign a big-name forward like Haaland.

“[Haaland] is the guy,” Berbatov said.

“He is still so young and the future is ahead of him. The amount of goals he’s scoring is unbelievable, he could be a great, great fit for United if he develops the same way as he is doing now.

“He is going to cost a lot of money obviously but for a talent like this, you can go and try your best to sign him.

“But honestly I would like to see Mason Greenwood develop and become better and better.

“I am a big admirer of him, he’s still learning from his mistakes on the pitch, off the pitch.

“I would like to see more chances given to him to prove how good he is. I like Martial as well and Rashford too.

“So if United don’t go to buy someone, I would like to see these three players develop and get better and better.

“Hopefully Greenwood can develop and become a really good player for United.”
