Former Cardiff City striker Andreas Cornelius has been ridiculed by fans on social media after missing a golden opportunity during Denmark’s 0-0 World Cup stalemate with Tunisia.

After a first half where Denmark struggled to break their opponents down, Cornelius was introduced in the 65th minute to try to find the breakthrough.

Less than five minutes later, Andres Christensen nodded down a corner, and Cornelius found himself just a yard out with the goal at his mercy. Instead of poking the ball home with his foot, he attempted a diving header but did not make good contact and his effort came back off the post, leaving fans stunned that he hadn’t scored.

One supporter has claimed that Cornelius has already produced the ‘miss of the tournament’

Another fan admitted it will be hard to convince people that Cornelius missed from a yard

‘Miss of the tournament and we’re 6 games in, and I think that is undisputable,’ one fan claimed on Twitter.

Another fan was in disbelief as they wrote: ‘How am I meant to tell my grandkids he didn’t score here?’

Cornelius’ technique was also questioned, with multiple supporters bemused that he decided to try to score with his head.

‘Why has he gone with his head there!?’ one fan asked.

Another added: ‘Cornelius has gotta resign as a striker after that, just throw a foot at it.’

During his time in the UK, Cornelius failed to score a single goal in his 11 appearances for Cardiff.

Another supporter feels Cornelius should no longer be considered a striker after his miss

One supporter suggested that his close-range miss highlighted why he struggled to shine in the Premier League.

‘He was once voted one of the worst Premier League strikers ever. Fair enough,’ they wrote.

Cornelius’ miss was the best chance that Denmark created, as Tunisia survived a late VAR check for a penalty to take a point from the game.

Denmark will hope Cornelius is not so wasteful in front of goal when they return to action to take on defending champions France on Saturday.
